Major Life Issues That I Help Clients Deal With
Male IssuesMales often present with specific clinical issues that relate directly to their masculinity. Many males have issues involving gender roles, anger management, aggression, expressing feelings, dominance, and sexuality. Likewise, males often have issues coping with challenging life experiences, such as relationship problems, family issues, aging, and physical issues. While there is nothing inherently masculine about many such issues, the way they emerge and manifest for males is often unique and requires proper understanding and a like-minded clinical approach.
AnxietyIntrusive thoughts of worry and fear can be devastating to those of us who suffer from anxiety. We may be worrying about things that are outside of our control. We may be suffering from panic attacks or have uncontrollable nervousness and fears in certain situations. We may have a constant concern for fearful future situations that may never come to pass.
Grief and BereavementGrief is a normal, healthy response to loss; however, we sometimes are in need of additional support to assist us through the process. There are many types of grief, such as loss of a loved-one; loss of a pet; loss of circumstances such as a job, home, relationship, or finances; and anticipatory grief, which occurs when someone's death is expected.
AddictionsAddiction problems arise when we are unable to resist our impulses to engage in compulsive behaviors or use mind-altering substances, which often leads to severe personal or social consequences and/or significant problems in our lives. Addiction is one of our most serious national public health problems. It is prevalent prevalent among rich and poor, in all regions of the the country, and all ethnic and social groups. The problem is that addiction tends to worsen over time, leading to many negative consequences that hurt both the addicted person and their loved ones.

DepressionFeelings of immense hopelessness, sadness and despair can be crippling to those of us who suffer from depression. It disables the everyday functioning of our bodies, moods, and thoughts. We become stuck in despair and cannot move forward with life. We may be grieving for people or situations and we may become overwhelmed with a loss of self-worth.
PhobiasPhobias are extreme fears of certain situations, objects, or settings that might make the average person only slightly uncomfortable or that most people would consider to carry only a slight risk of danger. We who suffer from phobias are extremely afraid of common, everyday situations and objects. We feel powerless in the face of our fear, and even the anticipation of fear often causes great anxiety.
Career Stress and Life ChangesWe sometimes have negative and excessive reactions to stressful situations and/or changes in our lives, which then result in significant impairments in our social, occupational, or academic functioning. This is clinically referred to as adjustment disorder. People experiencing adjustment disorder often have depressed moods, anxiety, anger, and sometimes display inappropriate behaviors that often get them in trouble at work, school or social situations.
Anger ManagementAnger is a normal feeling or emotion in response to irritating thoughts or circumstances. Anger becomes a problem when it is felt too intensely, is felt too frequently, or is expressed inappropriately. Feeling anger too intensely or frequently places extreme physical strain on the body and can often cause emotional trauma in ourselves. Likewise, expressing anger through rage, aggression, and hostility often gets us into trouble. Aggression is behavior that is intended to cause harm or injury to another person or damage to property. Hostility is a set of attitudes and judgments that motivate aggressive behaviors. Learning to manage and cope with our anger is important to lead a healthy and happy life.
